Oh Cam Newton!
As you may have heard the Carolina Panthers player was highly amused to be asked a question by a female.
The 28-year-old explained that he found it “funny to hear a female” talk about sport. Now he wasn't just talking about any female, which would be bad enough. He was talking about Jourdan Rodrique - a sports reporter for the Charlotte Observer.
Rude? Yes.
Patronising? Definitely.
Surprising? Not in the slightest.
Sadly the quarterback was merely verbalising the thoughts that filter through the heads of many who work in sport and sports media.
While you'd all like to think that there is little sexism in these industries, those of us that earn our living in them know the truth. Mostly because we've encountered several Newton’s throughout our careers.
And while many of you seem to think it's all fun and a laugh and a joke, it's not. To be frank, it's a pain in the arse.
When was the last time you went to work and were asked if you were a partner of one of the sportsmen you were being paid to watch and report on?
Or have you ever been asked which of those sportsmen you have slept with?
And that's just a couple of the questions I've been asked.
Not to mention the snide comments, regular challenges of your knowledge and general condescending statements about how or why you've got the job you've been trained to do.
I'd be surprised if there is a female sports journalist out there, who covers men's sport, who didn't sigh and recall their own Cam Newton moment.
Because sadly, his comments aren't as rare as you would hope. He was just naive enough to say them on camera.
While it's good to see many condemning his childish remarks, there are just as many making like of a situation that is so ingrained in Sport that many of us just brush it off. If you don't understand why it's not acceptable, I probably don't have enough time to explain it to you.
But think about the job you do and the job you've spent years working hard for and then consider how you'd feel if someone made a joke of your skills just because of your genitalia.
I'd imagine you'd be pretty pissed too.
